Developing and maintaining positive relationships with parents is a fundamental part of your job description.

Although it is not always easy, it is necessary. Parents and school-age staff need to work together to ensure success for the child.
Here are just a few techniques for building solid parent-teacher relationships:

Picture
Greet Them
Every time a parent or guardian comes into your classroom, make sure you have some sort of communication. If you are working with a child at the time, it could be a simple “hello” or smile. Everyone should feel welcome in your program.

Picture
Know Their Names
If you need to, make a “cheat sheet” on your roster with the names of each parent of every child.

Picture
Give Them Your Time
Whether it’s an email or short phone call, be sure that you are communicating with parents on a consistent basis. Remember to share positive stories and information with them as well!

Picture
Invite Them into the Classroom
Go beyond “career day” and ask for parent volunteers. Even inexperienced parents can read with the younger kids.

Picture
Provide them with Resources
Go the extra mile and give them extra tools that are specific to their child’s needs.
